DIY Project #42: All My Jewels Clip
If you caught our glitzy star comb DIY on Julep on Christmas Eve, you’d probably notice we’re all about the sparkle at the moment!
A couple of lovely readers asked if I could do a project for a super glam version of our New Year’s star combs, so we’ve gone to our favourite glam resource – jewels.
This is hair pin that will really turn heads as you shimmy on the dance floor this weekend.
Let get’s started with materials:
- Suede (or leather – can be the real deal or synthetic)
- Hair clip
- Sponge brush
- PVA glue
I bought my jewels from Spotlight ages ago and they were about $4 for a big tin – that’s a glitz and glam bargain if you ask me.
STEP 01 // MAKE YOUR BACKING
I cut this tear shape from the leather freehand, but if you aren’t confident with doing that, draw yourself a little template first.
STEP 02 // IT”S ALL ABOUT THE GLUE
It’s really important to use a strong glue for maximum hold. Make sure you really cover the suede piece well.
You don’t want bits of sparkle coming off on the dance floor (that would be not so glam!).
STEP 03 // ADD YOUR JEWELS & CLIP
I found there is a trick to this step – work with your centre jewel first and then work around the edge at the back.
You’ll need to work fairly quickly as your glue will be drying, but a nice tacky glue will let you move the jewels around easily.
You could draw a template on a piece of paper first and work out your pattern before you get going (eeekkk…I’m far too impatient for that!).
Once you’ve finished, glue your clip on the back and you’re ready to wear!
We hope 2013 is all bright and glitzy for you!
