DIY Project #5: Love + Happiness Posters

DIY Project #5: Love + Happiness Posters

I love the idea of scrabble tile posters with a vintage feel so this week’s photo project is simple homage to inspirational photographers like Charlene Precious and Alica Bock.

It is a great idea for a Valentines day present!

Firstly, let’s think about equipment:

  1. Camera (I used  Nikon D700 with a 50mm lense)
  2. Printer
  3. Paper
  4. Scrabble tiles (vintage wooden tiles would look the best)

Happiness Posters

Okay, here’s what to do:

Step 01// Firstly, find some vintage wallpaper images on the internet. There are a lot of free textures at places like Design Freebies or Web Design Ledger.

Step 02//Print the images onto plain paper at a high printing resolution so they are nice and sharp and bright.

Step 03// Place your paper near a window if you don’t have studio lighting and use the natural light to get a lovely evenly lit shot.

Step 04// Place your scrabble tiles on the paper in whatever message you like (love + happiness seemed like the right words for me today).

Step 05// Take at least a couple of shots of each setup – I always use a range of focal lengths to ensure I get a nice crisp image to choose from (for the ones above I shot at f3.5)

Step 06 // Download your images into Photoshop.

Step 07 //Brighten, lighten and sharpen until you are happy with the image.

Step 08 //Use a lovely vintage action like Paint the Moon’s Miracles (I added Blessings to the ones above as well).

Step 09// Create a vignette to give your images that vintage feel.

Step 10// Print + enjoy!

You could use these for a desktop background, a postcard to a friend or an art piece for your wall.

For more scrabble tile inspiration, check out amazing artists like Cassia Beck [you may decide to just buy ones of her beautiful pieces instead!].

Happy snapping!
