DIY Project #4: Felt Cake Bunting
This is a super simple project to get crafty in celebration of any kind of occasion (I made this to add to the festive cheer of the football Grand Final!).
Cake bunting is a really easy way to add some wham bam to your cake.
Supplies:
- Scraps of felt in any colour you like
- Embroidery thread
- Needle
- Skewers
- A delicious cake
TIP: Gather all of your supplies before you start to make sure you aren’t running around.
Follow these steps and your felt bunting will be made in no time!
Step 01// Gather your materials and sit somewhere where there is good light so that you can see to embroider more easily. Thread your needle so you are ready to go.
Step 02// Cut a triangle 1″ x 1.2″ and use this as a template to cut five more triangles. I used a 20cm cake pan, so if your cake is larger, you will need more flags.
Step 03// Using a running stitch, thread your embroidery cotton through your first flag. Make sure you leave a lot of thread to tie to the skewer.
Step 04// Repeat this for each flag, leaving a gap between each one.
Step 05//Once you have threaded all of the flags, make sure there is enough thread on either side to tie to the skewers.
Step 06// Tie your felt bunting onto your skewers and make sure there is an even amount between each flag. I found it easier to tie on once I had already placed the skewers in the cake.
Now you have a gorgeous handmade cake decoration that you can use time and time again – just wash the skewers gently in hot water after use.
Give yourself a pat on the back for getting crafty!
